Here is a sketch I just completed for a brand-spankin-new woodcut print I am going to do. I am pretty excited about this one. Pentecost is coming soon and I want to celebrate with this print of three disciples receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Abundant Life

Realizing who you truly are; becoming who you were meant to be can be daunting because this realization brings with it certain responsibilities. Now you are accountable for what you know; who you have become. Some people, frankly do not want to enter into the fullness of life because it is hard; it is difficult; it is the narrow way that Jesus spoke about. Most folks are happy in their mediocre existence that demands nothing from them and gives them an excuse to make demands on everyone else.

New woodcut print... finally!

I finally broke my one month (at least) of artistic inactivity. Here is a new woodcut print of people eating breakfast at Blue's Cafe in Kankakee. I was riding my bicycle to work one morning, saw this and was inspired to create a print of it. Another new thing for me is that now I am using standard sizes. This print is 5"x7" and matted in an 8"x10" mat. You can purchase it from Etsy if you are interested.

What is the purpose of art for the believer? What does art have to do with the calling of Christ?

I want to be a Christian artist, I want to glorify God with my art.
How do I do this? Always put a cross in my art? Only make art that can be sold in Christian bookstores? Does it have to be practical?

Look at the story: was Mary being practical? This was an act of abandonment. This was an act of pure non-self-consciousness.

When you do this… make your art in an unselfconscious way for the glory of Christ, expect criticism, from yourself, even from other “brothers and sisters”

Fragrance: is not really a practical thing. It scents the air… some people like it, some are offended.

Have you ever been hugged by someone who was wearing strong fragrance? It gets on you and you smell it the rest of the day.

In Christ God has hugged us. We have His fragrance on us.

But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.

This is new piece I am currently working on. It depicts Jesus washing a man's feet. I have been meditating on humility lately and this image keeps coming to my mind. I just started this one today. It is about 5' wide and aprox. 3' tall. I am using acrylic to paint it.

Finally got some new work to show. I have had this finished for awhile now. This is a painting that the Lord showed me in a vision after I asked Him what I should paint. It is acrylic on canvas 24"x15". It is called "You Can Go Back Home". The painting is based on the story of the prodigal son. It depicts the point in the story where the son came to his senses and began to consider the possibility of returning home to the father.

Here is my latest woodcut print, just finished about 10 minutes ago. I am incorporating another love of mine: the bicycle. I love to commute to work on my bike so why not make a print in honor of this? Also, found a great ink to use. It is a soy based product, cleans up with soap and water but does not dry on the pallette. It is called Akua Ink. I encourage all my printmaking friends out there to check it out.

I finally printed this cut... I actually cut it awhile back, but never got around to printing it. So I went on a printing spree today. I am doing a trade print with my printmaking class so I had to do someprinting. I also printed two others. I will post those later in the week.

Here is another sketch from my sketchbook. In order to get everything in I had to continue the drawing of the figure on top to the next page on the bottom. I am currently building up sketches and ideas for a new series of woodcut prints for an upcoming show. I have been invited to produce a body of work for a show with two other artists: Richard Benoit and Akiko Matsuoka Thorson. It is curated by Claudia Creamer. The show will be presented at Union Street Gallery in Chicago Heights, IL. It will be called The Artists Marks and will begin Aug. 27 and run to Sept. 24th 2010. I am very excited about this opportunity. I will keep you updated on my progress as it, ummmmm, progresses.

This is a new print. It began as a demo for my printmaking class. I just expanded it a bit. It is a drypoint and chine' colle print. You may recognize the image, I lifted it directly out of my sketchbook. It is about 4"x5" (image size); 8"x10" with the mat.

This is a drawing I did a few weeks ago while I was in Chicago. I was eating at Noodles Inc. (Veg. Pad Thai is the best)... anyway this guy was sitting next to me so I decided to sketch him while I was waiting. I love to try to capture the essence of a person with as few lines as possible. I am trying to get a poetic feel with this drawing. I am also interested with the notion of the "sacrement of the present", trying to become aware of my surroundings in the present moment. It is amazing how unaware we really are. This kind of awareness in so necessary to good drawing. I am pleased with how this turned out.

Thia is a drawing I did while on the train to Chicago. It seems, I have discovered, that some people are more apt to be aware of someone looking at them. I always try to draw people who do not know I am drawing them. This guy just kept looking up. Every time I would try to steal a glance to capture an angle, a line or a shadow he would look up at me and stare. I would have to look back down at my sketchpad and act like I was writing or drawing until I felt it was safe to look back up at him. It became kind of a game for me. Although I am sure this man was not particularly interested in playing.

This is a continuous contour line drawing. I did it as a demo for my drawing class. I thought it turned out pretty good. I was trying to explain the process of going from your gut when you draw. I think the continous contour line and blind contour line are great ways to practice this.

I know it has been awhile since I posted a new woodcut. I have been taking a break during my university's semester break. I have been doing a lot of sketching in my Moleskine sketchbook, though. I will post some of the one's I think are the best over the next several days. In the meantime I will also be working on some new cuts. Perhaps some of these sketches will make it into a print.

This first one here is a drawing I did of my daughter while she was reading in her room. She has this wonderful round chair she sits in, I thought it provided an interesting aspect to the composition.

Every artist should keep a sketchbook. The sketchbook is the place for me to explore and grow in my ability to see. In my sketchbook you will find all kinds of things, drawings, notes, sketches for compositional design ideas. I usually take my sketchbook with me everywhere I go. There are always opportunities to sketch a face in the crowd. I think I am most attracted to people when I draw. There is just something about the challenge of getting the right gesture of a person's pose, especially when they do not know I am drawing them. Unguarded moments become the impetus for future paintings or prints.

Being purposeful about making art

Recently I have been feeling a little depressed, a little overwhelmed, a little frustrated... and all this has been causing me to become a little cynical. A wise man recently reminded me that I needed to make time for my gifts. "You need to be intentional about taking time to work on your art, even if it is for just during your lunch break," he told me. I took his advice. Yesterday during lunch I went into my studio and closed the door. I purposely made myself unavailable to students; to the phone; to email... I set an alarm for one hour and began drawing the first thing I saw -- the glove I wore to work this morning. No big deal. No bells or whistles... just observational drawing... just graphite... just intentional time to express the artist inside me. In an hour the alarm went off and I started back to work. I opened the door and became available again. But there was a different me available. I was a little less depressed, in fact, I felt an inner joy that I had not felt in awhile. I was a little less frustrated; a little less cynical.

If you are an artist I want to encourage you to take time for your work. Sometimes you must be vigilant about making time, but let me tell you, it is worth it.

Durer Lecture

Reaping and sowing, this agrarian principle is also a powerful spiritual principle. The inspiration for this print comes from the prophet Hosea 10:12 "Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the Lord till He comes and rains righteousness upon you."

This is a woodcut print I did for my church. It is part of a series I am working on. The theme of the series deals with various ministries of the church. This one is about corporate prayer. It is really not curved at the bottom... that is just my poor camera skills. Since it is larger I had to take a picture of this one instead of scanning it. The apoximate size is 16"x17"

Putting Your Heart into It

How does a person tell if an artist has put his or her heart into a work of art? There are ways to objectify "heart" in art. Asian cultures use this as one of the defining ways to evaluate art. Art is not math and was never meant to be. If my art class were a "math" class I could simply measure out proportions on the drawing and compare these with the thing they were trying to draw. It would be either right or wrong. I believe this issue of heart is of primary importance. There are ways to look at the "heart" one puts in one's work. Some of the things I look at in art to discern the artist's heart is the amount of expression put in the work, also, the amount of time spent on the work. The thing I am most passionate about is the thing on which I will spend the most time. I have had much experience at making art and in looking at other people's work and I feel I am pretty perceptive in knowing how much time is spent on a work of art. My work does not lie, it will tell me and others if I was lazy with it or if I rushed it to completion. Also, one can compare this issue of heart to love. If I am in love with someone I will serve that person, spend time with that person, I will take risks for that person. Art that is safe and doesn't take risks shows there is not much heart in it. Also, I can look at process (sketches, research, studies, etc...) and tell if I am putting my heart into my work. What are your thoughts? What are some ways to objectively look at art and tell weather or not the artist put his/her heart into it?

One day I was just thinking about the relationship between us and the earth. God created us from the dust of the earth. In my holistic view of things I believe there is a genuine connection between farming and art and spirituality.

When is a Painting Finished?

Been thinking about painting lately. When is one finished? How do I go about the process of painting? I've been looking for rules and boundaries within which I can work. Then it came to me, the painting provides its own boundaries. I am often looking for the boundaries so I can be comfortable and have some kind of peace in the process of making art. So I wrote this poem... hope it makes you think about your working process.

Just begin a painting
and the next day work on it
and the day after that, work on it some more.
Begin to make shapes, mold the painting
Form it
Go where it wants to go for awhile.
Then make it do your bidding, wrestle with it in the night.

Sit silently and let it speak.
Tell it to shut up and you do the talking for awhile.
And the next day, work on it some more.
Look for patterns and edges and shapes and forms
Let your brush dance upon the peaks and valleys of the canvas.
Finally, it is morning.
The painting has had its say.
You have developed every conceivable area of the field,
To lay in one more stroke would mean you've gone too far.

It is finished.

Here is a new woodcut I just finished this morning. I printed it on mulberry paper and pasted it on the cover of a greeting card. Cards can be used for thank you notes, letters, or any occasion. It is nice to recieve a card in the mail instead of another e-mail. There is just something about being able to hold a piece of art in your hand and read a note or letter from a friend or relative. I will be glad to create small woodcuts on commision and put them on a card for you. If you are interested just send me an e-mail with a picture of what you want on the card. I am currently working on a new woodcut. It is going to be black and white. The image is of a gardener hoeing between the rows. My work seems to be going more and more in the direction of depicting the rural life. Perhaps that is because this is the kind of life I want to live.

Ok, Ok, I know this is not a woodcut... it is, however, a study for a woodcut that I plan to make some day. This is a small oil painting (5"x7") based on a sketch I did of a woman on the Metra train from Chicago. Painting gives me a chance to work more in values rather than the stark contrasts of the woodcut.
